Aging Behind Bars – CARE Connections

Increasingly in the U.S., people who are or were incarcerated are older adults with complex care needs.

What should nurses know about this stigmatized population? Read the July issue of CARE Connections, the monthly newsletter of the Center for Aging Research and Education. Here’s an excerpt:

“Prison represents a relatively unique episode of acute on chronic stress,” explains Merss. “Even if you’re in a ‘nicer’ prison, you have a chronic, high level of stress. Then you have acute stressors layered on top of that,” such as violent incidents and interactions with correctional officers.

This month’s CARE Connections also includes a profile of CARE Affiliate Wan-chin Kuo, RN, PhD; information about the revamped UW–Madison Certificate in Aging Studies; and news and events related to older adult health and well-being.
