Early Entry Option to PhD

The Early Entry Option to PhD (EEO) in nursing is an innovative program designed for undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a research career. Students start their research career in the honors program, which provides an introduction to the research conducted by faculty and a structure for introductory research experiences. Honors students may then apply to the EEO program in the spring semester of their first year of nursing school.

As students progress in the EEO program, clinical experiences are tailored to fit with their identified areas of inquiry. The PhD proseminar (sections 1 & 2) are completed in the second year of nursing school. Students may also add the PhD nursing theory course to complete up to 4 PhD credits prior to officially starting the PhD program.

Students who are making good progress in the EEO program do not need to complete the formal PhD program application and are guaranteed admission.

Curriculum

In addition to the Traditional BSN + Honors coursework, students must complete N816: Proseminar in Nursing Research (Sections 1 & 2)*. Students may also complete N801: Nurse Theory.

Review the EEO Program Plan for details.

*The EEO section of N816 is a 1-credit seminar course focusing on informatics, design thinking and innovation, data science, AI, and health economics.

Research

An integral part of EEO is preparation for a career as a nurse researcher. Throughout the program, students will participate in a research team facilitated by their major advisor. Students participate in colloquia exposing them to the breadth and depth of research at the UW-Madison School of Nursing. Additionally, colloquia bring together EEO students with doctoral students and faculty. As the students progress, there is an expectation that they conduct independent research.
