Preceptors play a vital role in nursing education by connecting classroom learning with hands-on clinical experience. As mentors and educators, they help students apply knowledge in real-world settings, bringing the nursing profession to life across a wide range of healthcare environments and patient populations.
If you are interested in working with the School of Nursing as a preceptor, please send an email to clinicals@nursing.wisc.edu to get started. We look forward to working with you!
Systems
The School of Nursing utilizes Exxat, a third-party clinical education management system, to coordinate and track student clinical experiences. Preceptors are not required to maintain an Exxat account. When access is needed, such as for reviewing timesheets or completing student evaluations, a secure link is sent directly to the preceptor via email.
Some firewalls or other security measures may reject these emails. Please ask your IT team to accept emails from “exxat.com” and “notifications@exxat.com” in order avoid this issue.

Clinical Judgement
Clinical judgment develops when students are encouraged to think beyond tasks and connect patient information, nursing priorities, and decision-making. Review the School of Nursing’s resources for promoting clinical judgement.
