Parents want clinicians to communicate clearly, honestly, and without judgement about their parenting actions. When they perceive judgement, trust in healthcare can be eroded. Dr. Pecanac’s research team looked at videos of patient-clinician encounters to examine patient and provider communication practices around delicate topics that could lead to moral judgements. Clinicians often elicited information about the child’s behaviors instead of parental behaviors, which may be a strategy to avoid attributing parental accountability. Parents also showed their competence by talking about how they provided care for their children.
