Happy holidays from the NRSP! Nursing Research and Sponsored Programs is pleased to highlight this month’s featured publication by Dr. Ann Wieben, PhD, RN, NI-BC, and is co-authored by Dr. Linsey M. Steege, PhD.
Machine-learning [ML] clinical decision support [CDS] tools can generate insights that have the potential to improve nurse decision making. Dr. Ann Wieben interviewed nurses to understand nurses’ experiences and perspectives with ML CDS. Drs. Wieben, Steege and colleagues’ key findings included : 1. experiences with healthcare technology leaves nurses open to benefits, but concerned about loss of nursing judgment and intuition in clinical decision making; 2. nurses want to know the benefits to patient populations they care for and that it will solve a real problem; 3. preparation to use the tools, and nurse involvement in designing them, is vital for understanding, confidence and actual use, and 4) ML-CDS integration with nurses’ decision-making autonomy is vital. Designers and health care leaders can use this information to enhance ML-CDS design and adoption in nurse practice settings.
