2-credit Hybrid Elective / Spring 2025 / Mondays from 3:00PM-5:00PM

Course Description
Seminar 674 is a hybrid class that meets in person approximately every other Monday. Mental health seminar focuses on developing a greater understanding of the role of healthcare providers in the treatment of people who live with mental illness psychotropic and drug therapy in the context of diversity, equity, and social justice.

Requisites
Declared in BS Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, PhD Nursing, Doctor of Pharmacy or Master of Social Work.

Course Learning Outcomes

The goals for this course are for students to develop a greater understanding of psychotropic drug therapy and the role of healthcare providers in the treatment of people who live with mental illness.

Course Learning Objectives

For each mental health condition discussed in this course students should be able to work within an interprofessional healthcare team using a culturally competent approach to:

  1. Assess subjective and objective information about the person you are serving in the context of their overall health goals to identify and prioritize problems and achieve optimal mental health care.
  2. Develop an individualized patient-centered care plan in collaboration with other health care professionals and the person you are serving to facilitate optimal mental health care and outcomes.
  3. Monitor the effectiveness of an individual person’s care plan and modify the plan as needed in collaboration with other health care professionals and with the person you are serving.
  4. Apply evidence-based care to practice by critically reviewing current published clinical research and guidelines.
  5. Support people in successfully navigating the wider mental health care system.
  6. Apply ethical and legal concepts and processes in the analysis of clinical situations.
