The Adult and Children’s Vision Screening University Partnership Program gives university students a hands-on approach and experience to preventative public health services in their community. This program certifies participants as Certified Children’s Vision Screeners, Certified Adult Vision Screeners or Certified Lifespan Vision Screeners – a national, 3-year certification. With Wisconsin being 1 of 9 states that does not require vision screenings for preschool or school age students, the Vision Screening University Partnership Program helps fill vision screening gaps throughout Wisconsin communities to ensure students receive a certified vision screening.
The Vision Screening Training Certification process involves scheduling a training with a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin staff member. Please refer to the lengths of the specified trainings listed below:
Children’s Vision Screening Training: 1 ½ hours
Adult Vision Screening Training: 1 ½ hours
Lifespan (Children and Adult) Vision Screening Training: 3 hours
Targeted grades to vision screen include 4K, 5K, 1st , 3rd , and 5th graders. Any students identified who may have trouble seeing in the classroom can also be triaged to participate in the vision screening.
PBW does ask all Certified Vision Screeners to participate in at least one community vision screening per semester. Children’s vision screenings typically take about 2–4 hours and are scheduled for the mornings (8 am – 12 pm). Adult vision screenings typically take approximately 2-4 hours, but are determined based on interest, need and availability of local clinics.
