Registration is open for this year’s Three Minute Thesis® Competition.
Can you explain your research in 3 minutes? Find out by participating in the 2022-23 3MT® competition! The Three Minute Thesis® is an international research communication competition in which graduate students explain their research to a general audience. Students in research-based master’s and PhD programs from all disciplines are eligible to participate. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners.
Prepare:
- Read what to expect, rules, judging criteria, and important dates.
- Register for the October 6 online workshop “You’re Researching What? Crafting a 3-Minute Research Talk that Appeals to the Public.”
- Read through the 3MT Canvas course that you’ll be in enrolled after you sign up to compete. The course includes slide design best practices from the Design Lab.
Compete:
- Sign up by October 19 to compete in semi-finals, held on November 2.
- Semi-finals winners receive a $100 cash prize and advance to finals, held on February 17. Finals prizes are $1,000 for 1st place, $750 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd/people’s choice.
- The winner of finals travels to the regional competition in March.
Still not convinced 3MT is for you? Keep in mind that the ability to communicate confidently and concisely about your research in a way that accessible to people of all backgrounds is a core competency of graduate education. As you strengthen these skills, you become better able to embody the Wisconsin Idea, expand the benefits of your research beyond the bounds of the university, and convey the significance of your work to potential funders, legislators, the media, and more.
