- This course is an introduction to health care systems. Factors affecting health and the value placed on health, the delivery of health care in different settings, the roles of various health workers, and the sociological and economic aspects of health care will be covered.
NURSING 590: The Meaningful Life: Critical Perspectives on a Contextualized Positive Psychology

- This course integrates critical theories and perspectives into foundational positive psychology principles to explore the fundamental questions What makes life worth living? and How can we improve life for all people? The course will begin with an overview of positive psychology: its origins, basic principles, and foundational theories. Next, we will explore methodological and conceptual critiques of mainstream positive psychology, identifying both its positive influence in the larger field, as well as its major limitations. The remainder and majority of the course will focus on exploring topics related to the re-envisioning of a contextualized positive psychology that focuses on the fundamental questions of what makes life worth living and how we can improve life for all people.
NURSING 590: Introduction to Relaxation: Mind, Body, & Spirit

- This course will introduce holistic relaxation concepts related to the body, mind & spirit. Students will examine the physiology of stress & relaxation, strategies for facilitating wellness and evidence for the same. The course provides students with the opportunity to experience and reflect upon selected strategies for wellness.
NURSING 590: Functional Health & Lifestyle Practice

- This course introduces the science behind and strategies for wellness based on a functional health approach, viewing the body as a complex and integrated system and addressing the root cause of illness or disease rather than treating only presenting symptoms. Students will learn how disease manifestation can stem from many factors such as genetics, lifestyle and environment. Lifestyle health practices will be introduced along with health coaching strategies for working with clients or patients. Course activities will motivate students to view health through a functional health lens, using a number of strategies to manage and prevent chronic illness.
NURSING 590: Pharmacology of Substance Use and the impact on society

- Course runs from 5/23-7/3
- No pre-requisites, open to all majors
- This course will guide students through a theoretical and clinical introduction to drug physiology, drug-related health effects, issues related to social and psychological effects of drug abuse, treatment modalities, and the legal and ethical concerns surrounding drug use. The course will include licit drugs (e.g., therapeutic drugs, tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, etc.), and illicit drugs (amphetamines, marijuana, hallucinogens, opioids, etc.). The course will cover the basics of drug pharmacology, with reference to toxicology and addiction physiology. The course is broad in scope, meant to provide a base for further research and learning related to this topic. This course is based on an interdisciplinary approach which considers individual characteristics in interaction with psychosocial conditions and experiences that increase propensity to misuse substances.
NURSING 564: Nursing & Health Informatics

- Course runs from 5/23-7/17 with synchronous meetings on 5/31, 6/21, and 7/12 from 1:00-3:00
- Must be admitted to the Traditional BSN program
- This course covers the application of computer and information technologies to support nursing in the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to health, illness, and developmental challenges. Identification of information processing challenges and evaluation of informatics solutions. Ethical, legal and social issues related to informatics in patient care are also covered.
