Compost changes: UW–Madison must overhaul food waste collection program

On July 30th, 2021, UW–Madison halted its broad campus-wide collection and management of food waste (also referred to as “compost”). Prior to this date, food scraps were sent to an anaerobic digester. The digester operation no longer accepts food waste.

UW–Madison is currently exploring all opportunities to divert food waste from the landfill.

The Office of Sustainability is asking for all members of the UW–Madison community to share their thoughts, opinions, and ideas to help create a long-term solution for the management of food waste at UW–Madison.
